Easy Healthy Snacks
When I’m trying to eat cheap healthy meals, one thing that I sometimes struggle with is not having any tasty (i.e. sweet) snacks. Sometimes you simply need something that satisfies your sweet cravings! Wouldn’t sticking to your diet be so much easier if you could just have a few sweet snacks? Here are my top five tips for healthy food that include tasty sweet snacks you can put into your healthy lunch that won’t break the caloric bank.
Berry Berry Berry Good!
Berries are mother-natures way of providing goodness. The darker the berry the higher the anti-oxidant content, so not only are you getting a hit of sweetness, but also some health-boosting enzymes too. Reach for a mixture of strawberries, blackberries, blueberries and a bit of apple for good measure. If you are feeling really naughty drizzle some greek yoghurt over the top. Perfect for adding to cheap healthy meals..Yum!
Apps! Not the iPod kind
Baked apples are another favourite to satisfy a sweet tooth and perfect for adding to cheap healthy meals. This one may need pre-preparing but is well worth it. Simply core an apple, and fill the middle with a teaspoon of maple syrup/honey that’s had raisins and cinnamon added to. Bake the apple for 15 minutes and you are done. This one is particularly useful after an intense exercise sessions.
Easy Yogurt
Ice-cream is a favourite with almost everyone, but all that sugar and fat doesn’t do us any good. If your dedicated to eating cheap healthy meals and have some protein powder laying around you can make your own frozen-yogurt-style pudding in minutes. Simply add 30-50g of chocolate flavoured protein powder into a small Tupperware tub, add 1-2 teaspoons of apple fibre or ground psyllium husks (available from all good health shops), then simply add a few drops of water (not too much) and stir or shake vigorously. You want what looks like a thick sludge with a nice smooth consistency. Then simply refrigerate for 10 minutes and eat! This is incredibly sweet, tasty, high in health promoting protein and fibre!
Jello!
Sugar free jelly is available almost everywhere these days and can be a part of your cheap healthy meals. You can buy it to make at home or buy it in a pot ready to eat. This makes my top list because if you are out and about and need a sweet treat but don’t want to hit McDonalds for an ice-cream then this is the next best thing, plus it’s probably even more sweet than the ice-cream! I tend to have a few of these at a time.
The Darker The Better
If you must eat chocolate, and lets face it, some of us must, then your best choice is going to be dark chocolate. Dark chocolate have extremely high amounts of antioxidants which are beneficial for your heart, blood pressure and can even lift your mood. A few chunks of dark chocolate will not only satisfy your sweet craving but also raise your endorphin levels making you feel happier. Be warned though, dark chocolate contains lots of caffeine, so I wouldn’t consume too much close to bedtime. Avoid milk chocolate because it is devoid of the goodness and full of sugar. Dark chocolate can be the perfect accompaniment to your cheap healthy meals provided it is eaten in moderation.
